Synopsis

Step into the world of tarot as seen through the eyes of an herbalist…

Bright and richly illustrated, Tarot of the Herbs presents a syncretism of the timeless knowledge of the Tarot deck and the wisdom of the plants. Combining the amazing and versatile skills of artist Kelly O’Gorman with Mary Tassell's hands-on knowledge gained over a quarter of a century in practice as a medical herbalist, Tarot of the Herbs offers new and fresh perspectives on the cards themselves, whilst retaining both the structure and wisdom of a traditional deck.

In addition, this deck has a distinctive, practical healing function. In the pages of the accompanying book, you will find simple and effective recipes using safe, accessible, and familiar plants to help support both your physical and emotional health and wellbeing.

From infusions to syrups, from amulets to tinctures, from smudge sticks to vinegars, Tarot of the Herbs offers us a variety of plant-based self-help strategies from the world of herbal medicine, and indeed our own kitchen cupboards. Modern day themes are also explored, with the ever-willing help of medicinal plants that infuse the text with their folklore, healing and deeper significances.

For anyone interested in either herbal medicine or the tarot, this book and card deck is an essential addition to your collection. For anyone interested in both, it is a must.

About the author

By (author) Mary Tassell

Mary Tassell commenced training to become a medical herbalist in 1996, after working for over 10 years within an NHS setting in clinical biochemistry. On graduating she became a member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (MNIMH) in 2000, subsequently taking over editorship of their in-house magazine for a number of years. She taught at both Western Herbal Medicine training clinics and for the Northern College of Acupuncture, where she taught Anatomy and Physiology. She strongly believes that medicine should not be a 'one size fits all' discipline and actively encourages and enables her patients to adopt strategies to improve their own health wherever possible. Mary completed an MSc in Western Herbal Medicine in 2006. She runs a variety of informal courses, walks and workshops in the Dorset area.

Illustrated by Kelly O'Gorman

Kelly O’Gorman is an artist and illustrator from Hertfordshire, known for her intricate hand-drawn work inspired by nature, symbolism and the imaginative language of the subconscious. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in 3D Modelling and Animation and a Master’s degree in Digital Practices in Design, and her practice is rooted in traditional drawing and intuitive visual storytelling.

Working primarily in fine black ink, she creates delicate, highly detailed illustrations shaped by organic forms, natural pattern and layered meaning, sometimes complemented with watercolour, acrylic or oil. She is also the creator of a series of colouring books for adults and children which have been featured on television.

Kelly met Mary Tassell while attending a foundation course in herbal medicine at Heartwood Education, where they connected through a shared interest in plants and symbolism. Her work has been exhibited at art fairs and is held in private collections, and continues to invite reflection and personal interpretation.
